JAKE LABOTZ A highly acclaimed, rip-roaring, Delta blues-inflected singer, guitar player, and songwriter. During his early years playing in Chicago, he began busking on street corners, mentoring with bluesmen on Maxwell Street like Jimmy Davis and David "Honeyboy" Edwards. He then traveled the country, playing juke joints, blues clubs, festivals and tattoo parlors. Jake has enjoyed an extended and fulfilling career as major draw and household name in Southern California before recently relocating to NYC. We're excited to showcase Jake Labotz's unique brand of Delta blues delivered in a riveting, Tom Waits-like rasp and growl. |
BILL SIMS JR
A 2011 Blues Hall of Fame Inductee. The Blues has many distinct origins and sounds. Delta Blues, Chicago Blues, West Coast Blues, East Coast Blues, Rhythm and Blues and on and on, each with its own unique flavor. If you ask Bill Sims what type of Blues he plays, his answer is simply, "I play the Blues." At age fourteen, Bill turned professional when he joined the Jacksonian Blues, a rhythm and blues band considered the top in Ohio. He learned his lessons sitting in the piano chair of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Freddie King, the Ojays, Jerry Butler and many more. He is currently considered one of the best musicians in the New York City Blues scene. Besides regularly performing at the best Blues clubs in the city, Bill tours extensively both domestic and internationally. His virtuoso musicianship can be heard in most homes across America in the advertising spots of Coca-Cola, Reebok, Folgers and ESPN. In 1999 his much-awaited CD "Bill Sims" was released on Warner Brothers Records to coincide with the 10 hour PBS special on Bill. |
FRANK FOTUSKY A multiple award winning Delta Blues Guitar virtuoso. Frank Fotusky plays Acoustic Blues in the style reminiscent of the great East Coast "Piedmont" players such as Rev. Gary Davis, Blind Boy Fuller, John Jackson, Blind Willie McTell -- to name a few. A majority of his material is culled from the '20's, '30's and '40's and Acoustic Blues and Guitar Rags are the foundation of his music. Along with this repertoire, his original compositions are rooted in this era and still carry a contemporary feel. East Coast or "Piedmont Blues," as it is so often called, consists of sophisticated syncopation with fingerpicked guitar. The result is a sound that resembles that of the ragtime piano. Frank has performed with Virginia Bluesman John Jackson, Paul Geremia, Roy Book Binder, Hubert Sumlin and has been festival headliner in his own right. |
JOHNNY CHILDS Johnny is a blues guitar phenom known for his unique, unorthodox guitar style, and "spastic" showmanship. An acclaimed guitarist, songwriter and performer, and star of the award winning, feature documentary film "The Junkman's Son". A tenacious and talented bluesman and filmmaker, Johnny is also the President of the NYC Blues Society. When he's not busy with all these projects, Johnny also leads the drive on FaceBook to create an International Blues Music Day. "But ultimately all I want to do is play a slow blues in "E" and get paid a lot of money to do it." |
FRANK MIRRA Think Elmore James, Eddie Taylor, Lefty Dizz, and most particularly JB Hutto. Big Frank’s playing is immaculate, his vocals are as declamatory as this music demands.
